The Art of Creation

The difference between a bad painting and a great one is persistence, passion, focus, a desire to create something beautiful or memorable, an understanding of how colors and shapes balance together, and the knowledge that the whole compilation is the sum of small parts and individual brush strokes.

Imagine you see someone painting. They are making tentative strokes…fearful paint dabs…a little bit here, a little bit there…they use colors directly out of the tube, carefully applied..they look to the teacher for guidance, ask others opinions as the painting is formed… they try and fix it according to suggestions, and when it doesn’t turn out exactly as they had envisioned they get frustrated and say “I’m not a good artist”.

Imagine another artist, if you will. This artist is painting with abandon and confidence, splashing paint onto the canvas, mixing and scraping and blending, freely playing with color and textures….not appearing to be bothered by messy strokes along the way. They listen to opinions, and take suggestions when they think it will add to the beauty of the canvas, but they know ultimately it is their painting and they have the vision to turn it into something beautiful and unique.

Imagine the resulting paintings from these two artists. Quite a difference. Whether the end result is to your taste or not, the difference in the process of creation is marked.

Such is life – are we scared to live it, carefully dabbing onto the canvas, or are we exploring it with wild abandon? Do we feel free to experiment, knowing that the messiness and chaos that sometimes go into creating a work of art is part of the process?
Our lives are a singular act of creation – ours – and have the potential to be a masterpiece. What a gift and an opportunity – beautiful, gorgeous, messy and real. I’m off to go play with some color …I think it’s an ochre and pink day…

New beginnings wrapped up in a few million snowflakes…

Good morning!

What a gorgeous, brilliant morning – the first day of a new snowfall. I’m currently looking out from my 17th-floor vantage point at all the downtown houses in their ticky-tack order, lined up with the snow gently blanketing their roofs. Overnight my neighbourhood is refreshed, become new again.

In looking at this, for me, it feels like a new beginning – like the first day of school used to feel – like I’ve been given a new chance to start again. A new opportunity, to be the person I wanted to be, to say the things I wanted to say – anything was possible.

For me, all it takes is a great line in a book, a beautiful phrase that ties together nicely, a gorgeous ornament, a new piece of clothing, a recognition from someone else that you are more than you currently seem to be…or a snow-filled morning that blankets the old and brings in the new. Moments like these take me out of my mundane reality into the world of magic, possibilities and new beginnings – beginnings that existed all the time, but that my tired brain had lost the art of seeing. Thanks snowfall..my muse for the day…anchoring me back into the world I want to live in, and reminding me that change can happen overnight and the way my world looks along with it.

Hasta la vista baby..onto change and possiblities!

Exuberance According to You…

Nicole Bonneau
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

On Exuberance

As I look out my window, I am reminded of a scene from childhood. The memory is my brother in fits of uncontrollable laughter as he is being tickled, he was exceptionally ticklish and we used to get him on the ground and just tickle and tickle him, sometimes he would beg for us to stop and we just continued on ‘til he had such a hard time breathing, we would stop for a second or two and we would allow him to pull himself together for a moment and then right back at it. He would try to tickle us in defence, but, I for one, developed the ability to control myself and not react when being touched in this way, but it was something he was not able to control.

The trees outside my porthole to the world are a reminder of this childhood experience. I am witness to the wind stirring the tree’s boughs, and they are unable to control their reaction, but the reaction is one of great laughter. It is cold out there, but I choose to notice laughter instead. I can hear in my humanity the merriment being released from these great fir trees and am witness to shifting my perception of who am I when I no longer try to control.

I ask you to take a moment in your day, and internally share a moment of laughter, an uncontrollable tickling inside of you that wants to be freely sent out as a gift to the world, and allow that wave of unrestricted joy to reach all our brothers and sisters to experience this delight, maybe not consciously knowing where it came from, only knowing its presence. Ah, what would our world be?

How would you describe yourself?

always find this to be a difficult question to answer. I am a sales person – I will try to sell you anything! From my ideas, to my business, to just being my friend! Being a passionate person, I find myself becoming an evangelist for everything that really strikes my fancy.

I live by the Law of Attraction and invest myself into those principles quite heavily. I spend a lot of time working on becoming a better person.

What inspires you?

My husband and other entrepreneurs inspire me!

What is the bravest thing about you?

Having my mother move in with my husband and I after 9 months of marriage – and then having my step daughter move in with us a year and half later. Family always can put you to the test.

What do you fear the most?

Nothing – I live without fear – OK – I wish I did – but rats really freak me out.

What do you wish everyone knew about life?

I wish that everyone knew how easy it is to stay positive and put that into practice. It takes so much more effort to worry and stress than to know in your heart that everything will turn out the way it should.

What do you think is most exuberant about you?

My sense of humor – I’ve been told that I should do stand up – I love making other people laugh!

When are you most proud of yourself?

When my step daughter, age 11, says that I am right about something.

What makes you happy?

Success in all layers of my life- personal, financial, career, spiritual, etc.

Is there a woman who has inspired you? If so, please tell us about her.

My mother and my sister truly inspire me. My mother raised me and my sister practically on her own and really gave us the building blocks to become great women.
And my sister just ran the London Marathon at age 42 – WOW – that’s impressive! She didn’t think my joke asking her if she had won was funny – but she still inspires me to be a healthier person.

Exuberance According to You…

David Reed
Cinncinnati, Ohio, USA
“Exuberance” From Another Perspective

“Exuberance” is among the most unique words in the English language.  It is the perfect word, but not one you use haphazardly.  No, “exuberance” is one of those special words you save only for those occasions when you need the quintessential word and nothing else will suffice.  Go ahead; say it – “exuberance.”  Feel its softness as it rolls off the tongue.  Feel its warmth as it passes through the lips like a warm summer breeze on its way to freedom and independence in the world.  Watch it as it moves away, seeking a willing ear.  Follow it as changes and gains strength and purpose along its journey.  See its powerful aura as it impacts on others, bringing its full force of meaning to the listener.  Yes, “exuberance” is one of the most unique words in the English language.  Like two sides of the same coin, it is both gentle and forceful, it is luxurious and powerful, always soft, never harsh and it carries with the promise of beauty, success, determination and skill.  In short, it connotes enthusiastic excellence in whatever it describes.

Everyone knows the definition of “exuberance;” at least I think I do.  I could go to my Oxford or Webster’s dictionary and look up the “officially” accepted denotation if I had any doubts, but let us leave the scholars at Oxford and Noah Webster on the shelf and see if we can define “exuberance” for ourselves.  After all, when you hear it you don’t whip-out your pocket dictionary to check your understanding; do you?  No, this special word is recalled from the recesses of your whole existence and it is under that umbrella that you understand.

When my personal catacombs of understanding hear this word, I first see a child, jumping up and down in unbridled excitement over some object or event.  The sheer joy of the moment is etched on their face and their entire body joins in the celebration.  From this first impact on my senses, the more subtle meanings start coming through.  I see a one-pointedness of purpose; an unwavering promise of success.  I feel the determination to excel and to accomplish the moment, carpe diem, or better yet, “seize the future.”  I see unity-of-purpose with no doubt that the instant goal is in-hand and will be reached.  I see fairness and honesty, respect for one’s self and for others; I see ethical actions and caring for all.  I see beauty and softness harnessed to determination and perseverance.  I see, well, “exuberance.”

I guess defining such a unique word may not be as easy as first thought.  But, as I said, we all know what it means; right?  Let’s try and experiment.  If the myriad of adjectives, some apparently conflicting, that our denotative and connotative gray-matter conjures up, let’s quiet that portion of our minds and start from scratch.  Put yourself in a completely relaxed condition.  If you meditate, then sit in lotus position and clear the mind.  If you prefer a water environment, fill a warm bath with salts and bubbles and climb in.  If nature is your “pull,” go and lie in the sun or under the stars.  Relax every portion of your being.

Recall your history, discover who you really are.  Be honest with yourself (and with others).  Allow your inner thoughts to swirl and condense into your essence.  Examine what is really important to you.  Focus on that.  Allow it to form into the perfect thought, the perfect goal, the perfect action.  Formulate your personal future plan and touch that special part within you that reaches out and grasps your future direction.  Formulate your plans and strategies for the rest of your life.
Revel in the ecstasy of knowing who you are, where you are going and how you will get there.

Now leave your momentary posture-of-reverie and begin the rest of your life.  Make your journey comfortable, dress as you would want the world to see and know you — casual to formal and everything in between.  You know how you want to be perceived; now is your chance to become the “you” of your visions.

You are ready, you have your future, you have your “self.”  You are one-pointed, you are determined, you are beautiful, you are committed, you are enthusiastic, you are excited.  Now stand in front of the biggest mirror in your home with your back to it.  Close your eyes.  Think of all you have decided, all of your goals, your future, your self.  Without looking, turn around to face the mirror.  Slowly open your eyes.  What you see is “exuberance.”

Age: 40
State or Province: Ontario

Website you’d like everyone to visit: YOURS!! And www.ted.com Hans Rosling’s stunning use of stats in his lectures on HIV and poverty worldwide.

How would you describe yourself?

Interested. Kind. Fun. Hard working. Devoted. Willing to take a leap of faith. Would rather try and fail, then never try at all.

What inspires you?

People who do brave and humanitarian things when no one is looking.

What is the bravest thing about you?

In the face of adversity, I draw from within for the strength to push ahead, be dignified and find the positive in the experience.

What do you fear the most?

Being in the dark. My dad used to play the “boogie-man” when I was little and since then, I have never quite gotten comfortable with the dark… just don’t tell my brother…!

What do you wish everyone knew about life?

That life is is so short – every day if a gift. Thank people and tell them how much they mean to you. Don’t let fear be the ruler of you. Live in the present. You can’t change the past, and the future is totally unpredictable – so why fight them? And, that doing brave and kind things when no one is looking is a totally cool thing to do and will give you the most amazing feeling in the world.

What do you think is most exuberant about you?

My passion for travel and meeting new people!!

When are you most proud of yourself?

When I allow myself the space to be proud of myself.

What makes you happy?

Love (all forms of it) and travel (everywhere!).

Is there a woman who has inspired you? If so, please tell us about her.

There are a quite a few actually, but the two who immediately come to mind are:

My mother. She is as beautiful as she is brave. We haven’t always been close, and like me, she isn’t perfect, but she is my very best friend and I love her more than life itself. She also embodies strength and a heroic ability to multi-task – having run a household and a business at the same time. Most of all though, she taught me (and I’m still learning!) how to communicate, be patient, actively listen to others (yes, I had to hold my hand up at the dinner table…), be humble, be fair and that even if I was being naughty, she loved me just the same.

Barbara Frum. When I was much younger I used to watch her on the nightly news with my parents and I thought she was a most amazing, inspiring woman. I wanted to grow up and be just like her. And have her job…

Yakity-Yak-Yak

I got my ass kicked by a herd of Himalayan yaks today. Jeff and I started off from along the river as they grazed, a dozen or so, loaded heavily with huge baskets and bags. We headed up the mountain on a steep incline. A couple hundred metres up, we heard the clong of yak bells – the herd were just below us.

An unusually competative fervour came over me (maybe it was defiance from dodging yak dung all along the path). Jeff urged me upwards, to stay ahead of the herd. At 4000 metres elevation, there is only 60% of the oxygen of sea level. So after a few minutes of climbing at a speedy pace, my heart is pounding and my breathing laboured.

Regardless, I raced ahead to keep ahead of the yaks, who meandered steadily up the trail, as if taunting me. The trail became narrower, the incline steeper. The black horned beasts were damn near vertical now, clockity clacking along without pause.

We came up to a cliff. I was really winded now, and worried about getting nudged towards the high drop. So at last I succumbed, straddeling the inner rock face in submission. The yaks passed by, brushing my backside. They trudged along for a few metres, then suddenly stopped for a rest, oblivious to my mild humiliation below.

Later, I thought seriously about odering a yak steak for supper, perhaps to reassert the dominence of my species. But, I’m learning to understand my limits and accept that my body is just not designed for this landscape. So, I had some yak cheese curds instead and called it a day.

Perhaps that competative spirit will reignite for Trailwalker? I hope I can keep pace! I’m sure it will be easier at sea level, but yikes, 100kms???
